Where and how do people take breaks during their day out on the streets of Indian cities? This is a collection of ink sketches of people, especially those who are a part of the informal economy, punctuating their workday with breaks. In the absence of supportive infrastructure, these moments of rest and regeneration are drawn from creative use of whatever spaces and objects are available: a pavement, a discarded table, a cycle rickshaw, boxes, crates, large concrete pipes and the odd unoccupied bus shelter…the city then, if one looks close enough, becomes one large vibrant living room.
Drawn over a span of a couple of months, these sketches were used to create calendars for the year 2018 as part of Hyderabad Urban Lab’s research output and continues to be used as a part of some of their pedagogic material.
