The American Consulate General (Public Affairs Section) operates an American Corner to engage with the local public, located within the campus of St.Francis College for Women, Begumpet, Hyderabad. For the institution’s 60th anniversary and the consulate’s 10 years in Hyderabad, a mural dedicated to ‘women empowerment and entrepreneurship’ was commissioned.
The brief was that it had to be young women centric, showcasing aspects of science, art, culture, and a sense of friendship & camaraderie and the colours had to be that of the American flag - red, white and blue. I chose to do a free flowing form of interconnected figures of women reaching out to each other and engaging in different aspects of learning and creating.
The wall outside the American Corner building was the mural site, a facade of 25ft x 10ft, punctuated by two windows and two doors along its length. I started by sanding, priming and painting the wall white from the previous yellow. I then sketched out the drawing directly onto the wall in pencil, did the first coat of colours followed by a second and third detailed coats and embellishments. The whole thing took about three weeks. Did it all by myself, incase you’re wondering.
